Los Angeles Backyard Remodel and ADU Design
June 5, 2025
Los Angeles Backyard Remodel and ADU Design: Transforming a backyard into a modern, multi-use retreat requires more than great ideas—it demands expertise. This recent project by Greenworks Construction delivered just that: a full backyard remodel featuring a resurfaced pool, sleek new hardscaping, and a fully equipped ADU complete with private living areas and a professional-grade recording studio. The result is a seamless blend of luxury, function, and everyday livability—right in the heart of Los Angeles.
A Comprehensive Design and Build Solution
Greenworks Construction was brought in to reimagine the entire backyard. The client wanted a space that could entertain, host overnight guests, and support creative work—all without disrupting the aesthetic of the main home. Our team executed every phase: design, permitting, demolition, construction, and final detailing.
The project was anchored around four major components: a remodeled pool, modern hardscaping, a brand new accessory dwelling unit (ADU), and a fully treated recording studio inside the ADU. This wasn’t about excess—it was about creating flexible, durable spaces that enhance lifestyle and value.
Pool Remodel: Upgrading a Backyard Centerpiece
Los Angeles Backyard Remodel and ADU Design: We started with the aging pool. Cracked plaster, outdated tile, and poorly draining surroundings made it more of a liability than a feature. Our crew resurfaced the entire pool shell, installed new coping, updated the waterline tile, and added energy-efficient pool equipment.
Lighting was added for nighttime usability, and the surrounding area was opened up to improve flow into the rest of the yard. The new pool area now feels like the outdoor centerpiece it was meant to be—modern, inviting, and easy to maintain.
Hardscaping for Form and Function
Next came the hardscape overhaul. The original yard had uneven paths, mismatched materials, and little usable space. We demolished outdated features and installed clean concrete pads, subtle steps, and custom planters that bring structure and design cohesion to the entire yard.
We used wide-format pavers and gravel fill to break up large spaces visually while still allowing proper drainage. Retaining walls and seat walls double as both functional boundaries and casual lounge areas. The landscaping was selected for drought tolerance and low upkeep, with integrated irrigation for long-term reliability.
ADU as a Private Guest Home
The centerpiece of the remodel is the custom-built ADU. Designed to function as a fully independent guest house, the unit includes a full kitchen, living room, private bedroom, and bathroom. At roughly 500 square feet, every inch was optimized for usability and comfort.
The kitchen features stone countertops, minimalist cabinetry, and built-in appliances. The living room connects via open concept and can serve as a quiet reading area or client lounge. Large sliders open to the yard, extending the usable square footage and inviting in natural light.
Private Bedroom and Bathroom for Long-Term Stays
The bedroom was designed to feel like a true retreat. A neutral palette, blackout window treatments, and quiet insulation make it ideal for long-term guests or creative residents who need to unwind. A private bathroom features a walk-in shower, floating vanity, and matte black fixtures that tie back to the rest of the ADU’s finishes.
Storage is tucked smartly into closets and built-ins, allowing this compact structure to function like a full apartment. Whether used for rental income, guest stays, or a creative work-live setup, the unit adapts effortlessly.
Studio Integration: Creative Space That Works
One of the most unique features of this build is the integrated recording studio within the ADU. Rather than dominate the layout, it’s tucked into the rear corner with full acoustic treatment and electrical isolation. It’s perfect for music producers, content creators, or remote workers needing a quiet environment.
The room features double-wall construction, isolated HVAC, and soundproof doors—designed with enough flexibility to work for both music and video production. With minimal modification, this space could also function as a home office, editing suite, or media lounge.
Designed for All Homeowners, Not Just High-End
Though this project feels upscale, it’s an example of how smart design can work across all budgets. At Greenworks Construction, we specialize in building for real-world use—balancing aesthetics, function, and cost control. Our team handles everything in-house, meaning no missed details or surprise fees.
This project didn’t require a massive estate or unlimited funds. It required vision, planning, and the right design-build partner. From luxury builds to strategic upgrades, we meet our clients where they are and bring their goals to life.
